GMOs: How Dangerous Are They?

GMOs: How Dangerous Are They?

Both clinically and personally, many holistic practitioners have observed a link between the spread of Genetically Modified foods (GMOs) and the recent dramatic increase in food allergies and autoimmune disorders.

Did you know that more than 70% of the foods in American restaurants and supermarkets contain genetically modified ingredients?

Is there a link between the spread of GMOs and the recent dramatic increase in food allergies?

Genetically engineered food is unlabeled, untested, and you’re probably eating it. Genetically modified foods have been linked to toxic and allergic reactions in people; to sickness, sterility and fatalities in livestock; and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals. Should you be alarmed?

Why is Monsanto spending millions trying to stop GMO’s from being labeled, even though 90% of the American public supports labeling? Why is an upcoming California ballot initiative one of the most important fronts in the GMO struggle? And how can you get involved?

Easy ways to eliminate seasonal allergies

You can eliminate seasonal allergies!

You can eliminate seasonal allergies!

From the Eco-medicine perspective, the outside environment (Nature) is not the enemy.

While this statement may seem obvious, some of the language we use these days often conditions us to believe the contrary.

For example, we say things like “The coast was pounded by the hurricane.”
“The Midwest got hit by tornadoes.”
“The ragweed pollen is killing me with my allergies.”

The main point to remember if you want to be in harmony with the environment is that our internal environment must be in balance with the external environment.

Just to be clear, I am NOT saying that external conditions have no effect on the body.
What I AM saying is that the external environment is only secondary to what goes on inside our bodies.
Pollen in the environment is NOT a pollutant — but what you put in (and on) your body can be — and can make you react as if pollen is the problem.

Specific ways to eliminate seasonal allergies

The internal environment has a greater influence than the external environment for good health — this is why fasting works — it purifies the internal environment even if the external environment remains toxic. This is also why other detoxification programs work.

I have been successfully treating people with allergies since the early 1990s, often with only dietary recommendations.

During certain times of the year if I overindulge in certain foods, I will experience allergy symptoms. When that happens, I usually minimize or eliminate these foods and “my allergies” go away.

Traditionally, for the vast majority of people, dairy, wheat, sugar and excessive carbohydrate intake have been the main culprits.
However, these days
GMO frankenfoods like soy, corn, canola, cottonseed and processed foods in general can also cause a worsening of symptoms. Even though these foods are very common in the typical diet, it is not difficult to minimize exposure enough to significantly reduce the severity of your symptoms.

More advanced ways to eliminate seasonal allergies

For people with a chronic history of allergies, including those who have taken lots of antibiotics, steroids and had surgery on the sinuses, simply eliminating the offending foods may not be enough to get rid of the symptoms. This is because their innate immunity has been weakened by the conventional medical treatments. In these cases, a course of herbs and nutritional supplements can strengthen the immune system and help the body to get rid of accumulated toxins.

What works for you? If you have any specific recommendations, please share them below.

A Short List of Conditions that Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Heal

First, we need to understand that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doesn’t target diseases to heal — instead it focuses on balancing the whole body. This is generally a foreign concept in the west where we tend to associate health with killing whatever it is that ails us (antibiotics, antivirals, lithotripsy, radiation & chemotherapy to name a few).

However, by restoring natural physiological balance, Chinese medicine can be effective for a wide range of health issues broadly categorized as:
1) Medical benefits,
2) Physical benefits, and
3) Benefits to well-being (Mental/emotional)

Balance is the Key to Which Conditions Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Heal

Balance is the Key to Which Conditions Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Heal

Medical Conditions that Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Heal

  • provides health care for most medical conditions, including coping with a serious medical illness
  • reduces the side effects of your medications while also helping them to work more effectively
  • stimulates quicker healing and recovery from illness and surgery

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) declared in 1997 that acupuncture is useful alone, or in combination with other therapies to treat asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, Fibromyalgia, headaches, lower back pain, menstrual cramps, myofascial pain, and osteoarthritis, and others…

The World Health Organization (WHO) also recognizes that acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine is an effective way to treat dozens of ailments.

Basically, TCM offers effective relief for…

PAIN: Acupuncture has been used for over 2,000 years to treat almost any painful condition, provided there are no medical contraindications which prevent treatment.

ORTHOPEDICS: Muscular aches, pains, sprains & strains, carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, joint disorders, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), tendonitis or tennis elbow, sciatica, back pain, knee pain, arthritis and common sports injuries. Other painful conditions can be relieved for almost any medical problem which has been thoroughly diagnosed and treated but in which the pain has been unable to be controlled.

GASTROINTESTINAL: Digestive & intestinal complaints and pain, candida, Crohn’s disease, colitis, constipation, diarrhea, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hiccups, ulcers, inflammation of the colon, nausea, and vomiting.

RESPIRATORY AND EAR, NOSE AND THROAT: Hoarseness, dry scratchy throat, coughs, common cold, flu, asthma, allergies, sinusitis, bronchitis, and vertigo.

EYE PROBLEMS: Inflammation, nearsightedness (in children), and uncomplicated cataracts

NERVOUS SYSTEM: Chronic headaches, migraines, numbness, neuropathy, stroke, epilepsy, certain types of facial paralysis or nerve pain, deafness due to nerve problems, partial weakness after a stroke, inflammation of nerve endings, certain symptoms of multiple sclerosis, sciatica and other neurological conditions

REPRODUCTIVE & URO-GENITAL: Gynecological/PMS pain, complaints & irregularities, menopausal discomfort, sexual dysfunction, infertility, impotence, prostatitis, urinary dysfunction, UTIs and bladder infections

METABOLISM: Fatigue, hypoglycemia, blood pressure regulation, hormonal disorders, heart disease, poor circulation, diabetes, gout, weight loss/control/gain, etc.

SKIN: Hives, rashes, eczema, acne, herpes, and shingles

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIDS), environmental and food allergies, Fibromyalgia, lupus, and other autoimmune disorders, HIV, support in chemotherapy/radiation.

Physical Conditions that Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Heal

Physical Conditions also respond well to Traditional Chinese Medicine and can give the following results:

  • The reduction or complete relief of most aches & pain
  • Enhancing your immune system and strengthening your body’s natural healing ability.
  • Muscular aches & pains including strains, sprains and sports injuries
  • Helping lose weight & maintaining a healthy weight
  • Improving your overall health, energy levels, vitality, and general well-being

Imbalances to Well-Being that Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Heal

Imbalances to Well-Being (such as mental & emotional struggles) are also effectively realized with TCM when integrated with counseling from a qualified, professional counselor or therapist:

  • Depression, anger, grief, fear and loneliness
  • Concerns with self-esteem, relationships and/or interpersonal skills
  • Stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, panic attacks and the cravings associated with nicotine, drug & alcohol control/withdrawal
  • Career & life situation transitions
  • Decreasing & controlling situational stress anxieties, while increasing relaxation

It is worth noting that in traditional Chinese Medicine, early treatment is emphasized since internal imbalances initially appear, and then after months, years, or decades those imbalances become diseases. It is always much easier to treat an imbalance than a disease.

Why We Need Healthier Alternatives to Sodas

In the last two days, two of my clients have confessed that they are “addicted” to corn syrupy sodas like colas and other soft drinks like those sold at neighborhood convenience stores. The adverse health issues with sodas and soft drinks are manifold and diverse:

1) They almost always contain GMO corn syrup:

  • More than 90% of all corn products and by-products consumed in the U.S. are Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs = ‘Frankenfood’ = unknown effects on health)
  • this sweetener can increase the rate of dental cavities
  • et cetera…

2) Sodas usually contain phosphoric acid which may:

  • be harmful to teeth enamel
  • lead to a greater susceptibility to osteoporosis
  • (according to it’s detrimental effects on the the pancreas) lead to a higher rates of blood sugar imbalances and full-blown diabetes
  • et cetera…

3) They contain empty calories (or if sugar-free, potentially harmful chemicals such as aspartame, saccharin, etc.): if you don’t already know about the harmful effects of these chemicals, I encourage you to check out or Dr. Hull’s site which is specifically devoted to exploring the dangers of aspartame in our diet:

4) Sodas are almost always taken when cold (and sometime with meals) — this is extremely bad for the digestive health and the circulatory system and can lead to, or exacerbate:

  • poor digestion, heartburn and/or digestive reflux
  • allergy symptoms
  • et cetera…

5) These days, when most every one except Empower Network folks are scraping the bottom of the barrel, the added, on-going expense of purchasing soda drinks every week seems like a waste of time, energy health and financial resources.

My Recipe for Healthier Alternatives to Summer Sodas

Healthier Alternative to Summer Soda

Healthier Alternative to Summer Soda

Here is my own personal favorite recipe as an alternative to harmful soda drinks (and by the way, it is a also very economical alternative to buying pre-packaged soda)

  • A large pitcher – 1 to 1/2 gallon pitcher (or one that is able to fit easily into your refrigerator — check this first — you’d be surprised how many big pitchers did not fit in my fridge)
  • One (or several) fruit blend tea(s) -PLUS- a caffeine containing tea:
For the fruit tea blends, I prefer Celestial Seasonings blends, however by all means, use you own favorite brand or personal blend.  The ratio should be about 90-75% non-caffeinated tea to 10-25% caffeine containing tea.  So, for instance, I might use 4 teabags of Lemon Zinger plus 1 teabag of Earl Grey.
  • High-quality salt:
Especially if you are making a decoction for the summer months, you will want to use a high quality sea salt or Himalayan salt to help balance your body’s electrolytes.  For each 1/2 gallon of water, I typically use about 1/8 teaspoon of Himalayan salt. This really rounds out the flavor and balances the sweetness and acidity of the mixture.
  • A healthy sweetener:
My personal favorite is Stevia, but you can use raw honey or any number of natural sweeteners of your choice.
  • Your choice of Carbonated water:
Sparkling mineral water or soda/Seltzer water
  • OPTIONAL: lemons, limes, oranges, fresh ginger, pureed fruit, etc.

  1. In a large pot (at least 1/2 gallon), add water to about 3/4 of the capacity of the refrigerator pitcher.  Add teabags and salt.
  2. Bring the water with the teabags in the pot to a complete boil, and then turn off heat. Leave uncovered for 1-3 hours (or until cool enough to pour into your refrigerator pitcher).
  3. Add desired sweetener and optional ingredients. Place in refrigerator (to drink immediately, fill container with ice to quickly chill mixture).
  4. When you are ready for your soft drink alternative, pour some of the chilled mixture into a tall glass with your choice of carbonated water (experiment with proportions to find your preferred mixture. It can also be further modified for each person: for instance, let’s say you like the mixture much sweeten than your spouse or friend does — just add more sweetener before drinking.
  5. NOTE: Since drinking cold, watery liquids is particularly harmful to the digestion (and thus indirectly harmful to the immune system), avoid drinks within 30 minutes of mealtimes and (except during the blazing heat of summer) allow them to ‘warm’ a bit to room temperature.

More Alternatives to Summer Sodas

I hope you enjoy playing with this recipe, and feel free to comment on your own improvements to it.

As a bonus, I have included an article from, as they did a good article on “10 Soda Alternatives.”
